Drug addicted carnies need rehab resources too

In my chosen profession known as carnival for everyone there are quite a few drug addicts. This is mainly because most trade shows receive a certain amount of payment every day, no matter what they do.

If you work in travel and food and other salaried positions, you are given a raffle every day. If someone works in games, known as agents, they are usually paid a commission based on what they contribute. In any case, you get money at the end of the night, right after the carnival closes for the day.

That night you will see a lot of activity around the barracks where all the help sleeps. Some just don’t tend to sleep at night until they run out of money, which is usually more towards the morning. On a big night, the people who work the games generally have more money, as they are usually paid the full commission every night. People who work in salaried jobs have a payday where they receive what they did not receive in raffles during the week. Either way, when addicts have a lot of money, they will normally be up until dawn. Many people in our business compare these addicts to vampires.

As long as the carnival is near a neighborhood that has a crowd of drug dealers, it is very easy for addicts to get their fix of what they like. Some even have fronts. For those who don’t know, a facade is credit. A large majority of the fairs that get fronted are agents. The reason an agent can get a front is because they generally take some of the money, as they receive it from clients, as the day progresses. You will then take that money to the local dealer and ask you for some more with the story of still getting paid that night.

Obviously some towns have better fairs than others. Sometimes the merchants in that city make a lot of money from these market men. In fact, they have won so much in the past that some of them followed the program to the next town. Some of these merchants ended up joining the carnival because of that one income explosion.

I have heard that people who use cocaine, also known as crack, often pursue the original sensation that they experienced from the first time. I have been told that after that euphoria or original feeling, they will never experience it the same way again. Most merchants who sell crack generally make money, no matter how good the fair or festival is, because of the people still chasing that original sentiment. The merchant who follows the fair to sell is also chasing, but he is chasing that original pile of cash.

Many people do not realize that all the shows that are presented at large fairs have a drug policy. In fact, they even have random drug tests. Mainly for insurance purposes as it cuts down on your travel and insurance halfway through some tests. Sometimes they use these tests when someone has done something recently that makes them undesirable. They then give that person a test, which most likely will fail, as a method of firing the individual in question. Most programs do not care as much if an agent uses hard drugs because they are not operating attractions. They are usually very concerned when they learn that transportation personnel are using some kind of illegal substance.

Some larger shows will have a school for the children who travel with the show. The program hires a teacher and the teacher travels with the program teaching school-age children whose parents travel with the program. There are currently no rehab programs of any kind that travel with the shows. Current rehab consists of pressuring participants in an effort to embarrass them and alert them to their problem. This is not working as well as an education, I don’t think so. With a good program, carnivals could possibly prevent these narcotics from getting into the mouth, nose, and veins of show people.

I personally know several people in my business who have used hard drugs. These people found ways to quit smoking. Some have gone to treatment centers out of season and others have had the opportunity to quit smoking. Each of them will talk about when to quit smoking and will include the positives that quitting has brought. Most of the programs that help people get off hard drugs are run by former abusers. Maybe that’s what the big carnivals should do. Get the boys and girls who know they are rehabilitated to spend time with current users each week.
