Can video games turn a thick potato into a stud?

When I was a kid, my friends and I used to sit for hours playing video games, drinking soda, and eating junk food. Ah, those were the days. Fortunately we did other things, like climbing trees and swimming all day, which kept us in good shape. If we hadn’t done those things, I’m sure video games would have turned us into fat, lazy adults.

In the days of the Sega Genesis and the original Nintendo, all you really did was sit on your butt and move your fingers around the controller. Usually there was a bottle of soda or some sugary drink on one side and a bag of junk food on the other. These were designated for when the games were loaded.

Fortunately, today’s video game creators have become much smarter and more health conscious. They have finally begun to realize the dangers of obesity facing children today and are finally beginning to take the proper steps to correct it.

Nintendo Wii, in my opinion, is one of the best products that any company has come out with in a long time. It allows kids (and adults) to have fun simultaneously while getting a great workout.

Although not all games make you move a lot, some of them, boxing games in particular, are spectacular to have fun with a good workout. A few weeks ago I played for about 45 minutes in a row with my girlfriend’s cousin and by the time I finished I was already sweating a lot.

This is the perfect opportunity for an otherwise “lazy” person to exercise and honestly not even realize it. Of course, someone who plays a video game on Nintendo Wii won’t get in great shape, but for someone who never exercises it, it can produce pretty good results if played consistently enough.

Other ways to exercise while playing video games

You don’t have to stop playing the game the way it’s supposed to be played, do you? Let’s say, for example, that instead of just boxing, you slump to do a series of push-ups after round 1. Then after round 2, do some bodyweight squats for 30 seconds. Round 3 can be for a basic job, and so on.

You see, by being a bit creative, anyone can exercise while playing video games. People who don’t like to exercise can try challenging themselves to complete some type of exercise before the game loads or before the next round returns.

When I play video games, I like to sit on an exercise ball and tense my stomach as I play, then do some kind of exercise when the game is loading for the next round, checkpoint, game save, etc.

If I get bored with it, I’ll also jump up and down, essentially skipping rope with no rope, either on 1 foot or both for a minute or 2. This is one of my favorites because it doesn’t just provide a workout, but it makes the game a bit more difficult as the controller is a bit more difficult to handle when you are bouncing up and down.

Another benefit of doing this is that it will prompt you to drink water while doing it. I don’t know a single person who drinks soda or beer while exercising, and I hope I never meet a person who does. Most people are dehydrated these days, so this might help.

Although I think this is a great opportunity for otherwise lazy people who cannot motivate themselves to exercise, I do not condone using this as their only means of exercise. If you haven’t exercised in years, you can follow this plan for about a month. Then I would suggest coming up with an actual training plan and sticking to it.

If you are not a video game player, you can substitute video game for watching TV, which I am sure 99% of people today do on a regular basis. Instead of flopping onto the couch, sit on an exercise ball. Hold a board when the commercials come up, then the next commercial do a push-up, then the next one do some squats, and then do some back hypers on the next one.

By doing this and sticking to it, you will never have an excuse for not having time to exercise. Fat lazy TV junkies can become athletic fitness gurus just by starting with this simple idea.

If you are a television addict or just want to do a new exercise, I urge you to give this a try. It’s great for days when you’re feeling unmotivated and it can be a lot of fun. You might even want to challenge your friends to a round of video game workouts to see who has the best overall gaming and fitness skill.
