To Azeroth and beyond!

I’m from the old school. I was a little kid in the early 80’s and had the privilege of owning an Atari 2600. PacMan, Space Invaders, Q-bert…even the lesser known but equally amazing Keystone Capers, Air Sea Battle and Plaque Attack. . From this catalyst of a machine, my love for video games was born. To sum up 20 years in one sentence, I moved on to the Nintendo Entertainment System, then the Super Nintendo, PSone, Dreamcast, PS2 and PS3.

There is a system that I left off the list. That system is my computer. I had played the old game “Quake” in the past, but hadn’t really dabbled much in the ways of PC gaming, and didn’t really consider it a “gaming system”…until that day. So, despite my distaste for computer games, I decided to give World of Warcraft a try. If you’re ANY kind of gamer, you know that games get old. You become familiar with them. You already know which castle the princess is in, or in what order Lara Croft must pull the levers. Even sports games get old after a while. After nearly 5 years of constant play, World of Warcraft hasn’t aged.

You would have to live under a rock for the last 5 years not to have heard of this game. Blizzard Entertainment currently has 10 million subscribers. All of which, you paid around $30 for the original game, $40 for each of the 3 expansion packs, and paid a monthly fee of around $14 depending on your billing cycle. This means… hold on, because the numbers are staggering… a person who has played WoW for 5 years has paid $150 for the software and $780 in monthly fees, for a total of $930. Blizzard earns approximately $140 million per year in subscription fees. With all the free games out there, even with the PS3 offering free online games, how come people still pay to play this game? Variety.

WoW is really that. is a world It is a social environment, where people of all ages, races, genders, religious beliefs, etc., come together to achieve a common goal. This giant world is yours to explore, and there is a LOT of land to explore. Create your character, choosing their race, class, gender and appearance. Go on missions. Try your luck on one of the many player versus player battlefields. There is a mail system in the game, as well as a fully functioning economy, complete with supply and demand. The scenery is beautiful, the graphics… immaculate, and the gameplay… exceptional.

There are almost “too many” things to do in this game. That’s why people pay to play. That’s why I pay to play, because every time you log in, you experience something different. Isn’t that what life is about? Variety? We might as well have some fun before the end of the world… of warcraft.
