Game Tester jobs: preparing for your interview

Video game testing is the holy grail of all video game work. Full-time game tester jobs are few and far between, but when one is found, it’s likely to be hotly contested, sought after by dozens of applicants, all qualified for the position. When interviewing for a position as an internal video game tester, you want to be fully prepared and ready for any questions they may ask you.

Full-time gaming tests are more difficult than many believe. Not only are you responsible for daily or weekly versions of a game, with highly detailed note taking and repetitive repetitions through broken levels, but you are likely to spend long hours meeting your deadlines and a lot of time writing reports instead of playing video game.

For any video game tester job you apply for, you’ll want to do a lot of research before going to your interview. Know exactly what type of games the company you are requesting creates, what their development budgets and timelines are, and how many people they employ.

When asked questions about your availability and dedication, you can give specific answers about the hours and duties you will be stuck with.

Rehearsing

Like any job, you should be prepared for any advance questions. If you think your video game test interview might include questions about what games you play and why, have good answers ready. Don’t offer the typical answer you would give your five friends on a road trip, like “Cavo fighting games.”

Talk about the details in the game’s design and the mechanics that draw you to that genre. It’s helpful if you tailor this answer to the types of games the company you’re interviewing makes. It’s a great job for those genuinely interested in video games, but you’ll be playing the same game, in broken modes for weeks, if not months, discovering mistakes, taking meticulous notes, and getting revised edits with almost the same details weekly. However, it is a great job for industry lovers, so when interviewing, be sure to follow all the standard interview rules considering the complexity of a game test job.
