First off, understand that you will not become a millionaire playing video games. You can, however, make a living from it. Second, you have to realize it’s not extremely glamorous. You may spend hours and hours replaying the same game, the same area, or even same portion of an area trying to weed out all the bugs and little nuances. Sure, you can brag about how you play video games for a living, just know that it’s not all fun and games…sort of.

Now, if you’re still interested, there’s the hours. Depending on who you work for, this can vary greatly. Some companies will want you to be at a certain area where they can monitor your activity. However, now there are companies having testers work from home at their own leisure. Here, people are more likely to play as they would normally, so it has its benefits. Admittedly, it is a nice benefit to the tester.

Finally, you have to know that breaking in to the field is not easy. There are many people who would gladly make $10-20/hour starting salary to play video games. Not only that, but many people are trying to advance in the industry to design, composing, and other positions. It can be competitive.

There are ways to get in, if you have the right tools. There are some products available that can teach you exactly where to go, who to talk to, and pretty much everything you need to do to make it as a video game tester.
