Should diabetics eat buns?

Should bagels be added to the list of foods that diabetics should avoid? Isn't it bad enough to ban birthday cake and chocolate cream cake?

For many, bagels have long been considered a healthy food option. Surely chewable goodness is better for you than white, doughy bread. But what if you knew that it is worse?

Both bagels and white bread are made of flour, water and some other ingredients. The white flour in standard bagels is the same as white bread. Today, almost everyone knows that white bread is bad for diabetics. Increase blood glucose levels as fast as table sugar.

So how could a bagel be worse than bread?

A single slice of white bread provides 60-80 calories in the form of carbohydrates. Two slices of toast or sandwich bread equals about 150 calories. But what about a bagel? A mini bagel also provides about 150 calories, but a regular-sized bagel has 250-300 calories, while one of the delicious large varieties can have up to 500 calories! This is how a bagel can be worse than bread. It is unlikely that you will feel and eat 7 to 8 slices of bread, but that is exactly what you are doing if you give yourself to a large muffin.

All rolls are not the same in other nutritional aspects. For example, a whole wheat bagel may have approximately the same calories as a French toast bagel (250 to 300 calories), but it contains only one third of sugar but three times more fiber. Whole grains take longer to digest the body and, therefore, do not raise blood sugar so quickly. Dietary fiber improves bowel function and promotes a feeling of fullness (fullness after eating). A bagel loaded with melted cheese will have more fat than a bagel of blueberries or raisins.

And what about the ingredients? Two tablespoons of low-fat cream cheese adds another 70 calories, not a bad option for a light breakfast or lunch. However, two tablespoons of peanut butter (or butter, or spread of mayonnaise) equals 200 additional calories, most of which come from fat. A better option would be an equal serving of sugar-free preserves (as little as 10 calories per tablespoon) or a few slices of lean turkey breast (about 50 calories).

People like bagels in large part because of the texture. It feels like you are eating more when you have to chew more vigorously. That is not a bad thing, especially for diabetics who feel deprived most of the time.

While it is true that a diabetic should avoid eating a giant bagel covered with peanut butter (a 700-calorie feast), a mini wheat bagel with low-fat cream cheese provides less than half of those calories and is a game Just for the hungry diabetic women who want a carbohydrate solution.
